Rio Tinto & Dominion Unveil Largest Canadian Diamond Ever Recovered


Rio Tinto and Dominion Diamond Mines have just announced that they have discovered a new 552ct gemstone-grade yellow diamond in the Diavik mine in northwestern Canada in October this year - "Canadamark", measuring about 3 cm by 5.5cm,  it is said to be about the size of a chicken egg. The find far surpasses the previous record held by the Diavik Foxfire at 187.7 carats. This diamond is an unexpected surprise for the Diavik Diamond Mine.They said the diamond would likely become part of its Canadamark program.
The company plans to sell "Canadamark" in the form of finished diamonds, Dominion announced in a statement. And emphasizing that "only a handful of master cutters in the world are qualified to polish it. The value of "Canadamark" is currently uncertain.

Diavik Diamond Mine is the most productive diamond mine in Canada, with an annual output of about 6 million to 7 million carats. At present, Diavik Diamond Mine  is operated by Diavik Diamond Mines (2012) Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, which owns a 60% interest the mine. Dominion owns 40% of Diavik.
